Code of Conduct
Body

Role of Members who have registered on a British Eventing Programme

This code is built on the principles of integrity, honesty, fair play and respect.  These principles are integral, not optional, and apply to all levels of ability and commitment.  Our sport is unique in that it involves an animal and these principles and duty of care not only apply to the human participant but also the horse.  In all our endeavours we must ensure the highest standards of animal welfare.

Members should:

  • Show respect for their ponies / horses, coaches, officials, competition organisers and stewards and their fellow members.
  • When competing they should abide by the rules of the competition and accept the decisions of the event stewards and organisers.
  • They may query a decision they do not understand politely and listen to the explanation.
  • They should support the other members of their team and also the other members of their national governing body.
  • Respect dignity and worth of all people involved in eventing, regardless of gender, race, colour, disability, sexuality, age, occupation, religion or political opinion.

Whilst attending BE organised training or whilst competing in British Eventing Affiliated Events or FEI competitions members should not:

  • Impinge on others enjoyment of the sport or my performance by consuming alcoholic drinks or smoke immediately prior to or while participating in the sport, or while safeguarding children, young people or vulnerable adults.
  • Abide by the Anti-Doping policies and not taking illegal substances immediately prior to or while participating in the Sport.
  • Smoke.
  • Engage in sexual activity.
  • Use foul language.
  • Tolerate or be involved in discrimination of any kind.
  • Leave an organised event unless accompanied by their parent or guardian or a BE official.
  • Criticise officials, instructors, volunteers or members on social networking sites or by the use of text messaging.

Social Media

BE recognises that the internet provides unique opportunities to participate in Interactive discussions and to share information using a wide variety of social media.

However, Members’ use of social media can pose risks to BE’s reputation and its confidential and proprietary information. It can also jeopardise its compliance with legal obligations.

Therefore, in the interests of the sport, when using the internet and all social media Members must not:

  1. Post any threatening, derogatory, obscene, indecent, seditious, offensive, pornographic, abusive, disparaging, racist, discriminatory, menacing, inflammatory, blasphemous, or defamatory statements or material, including, but not limited to, statements or material concerning BE, its members or former members, its sponsors, affiliates and stakeholders;
  2. Make any statements that could directly or indirectly damage BE’s name;
  3. Use BE logos, brand names, slogans or other trademarks, or post any of its confidential or proprietary information without BE’s prior written permission. Moreover, if Members disclose or use in any way their BE membership when using social media, they must make it clear that they are speaking on their own behalf and that their views do not represent those of British Eventing. Failure by Members to comply with the provisions of this Rule may result in disciplinary sanctions under these Rules and/or civil proceedings. BE may also require Members to remove postings, comments or any other submissions which may constitute a breach of this Rule. BE reserves the right to monitor, intercept and review social media postings and activities to ensure that its Rules are being complied with, and for its legitimate business purposes.

BE will comply with any law, or request by any governmental or other regulatory authority, or order by a court or other authority of competent jurisdiction, requiring BE to disclose the identity or location of any Member posting any material in breach of this Rule. BE may share a Member’s personal information with the police or any other governmental authority if it is asked to do so in connection with the investigation of suspected illegal activities.
